Curriculum Update - Changes Ahead

Changes Ahead

You may be aware that the Government has recently announced significant changes to the examination system and school accountability tables.  These changes will be phased in over the next four years. Below is a brief summary of how these changes will affect Shelfield Academy students in each different year group.

Examinations and Grading

Pupils in Year 11 in 2015/16

Pupils in Year 11 will be awarded GCSE grades in the range A*-G, as has been the case over recent years.  However, please note that GCSEs are now linear, which means that pupils sit all of their examinations at the end of the course.

The following four measures will be used to judge the academic performance of each student:

A*-C in both English and mathematics
Attainment 8
Progress 8
English Baccalaureate

Further details about attainment 8 and progress 8 can be found here

Pupils in Y11 in 2016/2017 (Current Year 10)

Pupils in Year 10 will be the first to study the new English and mathematics qualifications.  They will see a change in the grading of GCSE English and mathematics; the current A* – G grading system will be replaced with a new 9 point scale, 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.  All other GCSE subject grading will remain the same.  This means your child will leave school with a combination of qualifications graded as A* – G and 1–9 (English and mathematics only). A comparison between A*-G grades with the 9-1 point score can be found here

The following four measures will be used to judge the academic performance of each student:

9-5 in both English and mathematics
Attainment 8
Progress 8
English Baccalaureate

Further details about Attainment 8 and Progress 8 can be found here

Pupils in Y11 in 2017/2018 (Current Year 9)

Pupils in Year 9 will be the second cohort to study the new English and mathematics qualifications.  They will be the first study new GCSE qualifications in a number of other subjects, including

  • Science
  • Geography
  • History
  • Languages
  • Art
  • Computing

  • Music

They will see a change in the grading of these GCSE subjects; the current A* – G grading system will be replaced with a new 9 point scale, 1 being the lowest and 9 being the highest.  A comparison between A*-G grades with the 9-1 point score can be found here
